Magical Maladies
- A documentation donated by Cleopatra2121

The Healers of St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries ask anyone suffering from anyone of the following illnesses to please contact them immediately. If one suspects symptoms of any of the following illnesses please contact St. Mungo’s, and if you cannot find your affliction in the section provided, contact St. Mungo’s immediately anyway to ensure your health and the health of others. Lives can be saved if one is brave enough to admit that there is a problem.

Dragon Pox- Like the muggle chickenpox, Dragon Pox has absolutely nothing to do with dragons. In the beginning it was thought that the disease was obtained from the consumption of poorly prepared dragon meat. Many wizards feared that there was some sort of poison within the meat in which resulted in the consumer’s death, when in fact if one did indeed die form the meat and poison was found in the bloodstream of the deceased, it was more than likely added to the meat during preparation and was not of a direct correlation to the actual dragon.

Dragon Pox actually describes the scale-like texture of the skin in which develops after a short period of time. It is an air born illness in which is most contagious during the two week period between the time the first spot appears and the last one leaves. Dragon Pox first appears to be a rash in which tiny itchy pimples appear upon the abdomen and back. The more one scratches (which is not advised), the more likely it is for the disease to spread. The pimples are usually a greenish brown in color and once the pimples burst and blister the scab in which appears looks more like the scales of a dragon or lizard than anything else, hence the name.

Within the first days of acquiring the illness one is likely to feel weak and even a bit lightheaded. Constant vomiting is to be expected during this time for the unbalance of a person’s equilibrium causes for said person to be a bit unstable on their feet.

Icarus Syndrome- Icarus Syndrome appears to be more of a curse than an actual malady. Named after the tale of Daedalus and Icarus, the malady supposedly came into existence not long after the death of Icarus. It often occurs in young children who choose to continuously defy their parents. After certain deeds are done in order to undermine the authority of the parents, wings made from what is suspected to be feathers and wax, considering the legend, sprout from the backs of the child. The wings are meant to be a temptation, one in which is often deadly if the child is not supervised. While most children enjoy the freedom, many have become careless and flown too high, subsequently falling to their deaths after the wax has melted.

Scrofungulus- Scrofungulus is a highly contagious malady in which should be treated at once. In its early stages Scrofungulus is reminiscent of the muggle flu, the first stage is a fever in which forces the body temperature to rise to uncanny heights. The symptoms of the fever are muscle aches, headaches, a lack of appetite, sweating, shivering, dehydration and a general weakness which usually binds the afflicted to bed. The last and clearly most dangerous symptoms of the fever are hallucinations. The hallucinations do not start off strong, most merely throw off the images in which play before the eyes as their mind’s way of playing tricks. Following the fever are blisters which usually begin to take form in tiny clusters.

In the beginning, the blisters appear to be nothing more than an itchy discoloration of the skin. Unlike normal blisters, these do not heal quickly, in fact, they are very painful and popping them is highly unwise. If left untreated the blisters will mutate into tiny boils which only grow as more time passes. The boils are often described as being red, blood-filled lumps which fill until breaking then burst causing a painful irritation. It is not uncommon to see wizards and witches covered in different forms of gauze to attempt to slow the bleeding.

Scrofungulus is most dangerous during its later stages. The boils will continue to bleed until there is no longer any blood within the body. The hallucinations, which are the number one cause of death when concerning this aliment, have led witches and wizards out of windows, off cliffs and the tops of their homes. Every hallucination is different for every witch or wizard, although it has been said that the images are most horrific, more than just rivaling the images portrayed by a boggart.

If one even so much as suspects that they have acquired Scrofungulus they are asked to contact St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries before arriving to ensure that they proper actions are made pending your arrival.

Spattergroit- A malady in which is spread through the respiratory system; it is an infirmity in which classical symptoms include a dry cough, a high fever lasting for at least three days, runny nose, and red eye. A rash of deep pot marking appears several days after the fever, leaving the skin blotched and irritated. This is the most widely noticed symptom of the disease. In more serious cases, the cough has become most painful and bloody. Young children who fall victim to Spattergroit should immediately be taken to the closest trained healer for it is possible for them to suffer from fever induced seizures.

Vanishing Sickness- While one would think that the Vanishing Sickness is indeed a highly recognized illness, it is sad to say that in its early stages it is barely noticeable. It begins with a prickling sensation, usually on parts of the body in which there is a large surface area. Following the prickling sensation, if one looks carefully they will notice what appears to be a blurring of the skin, while the texture remains the same to the touch, the appearance of the skin is indistinct and almost hazy. The haze will spread upon the body until entire appendages are obscured. If one does not treat the malady in time, body parts will come to disappear and finally the body of the afflicted will disappear as well.

Despite containing canon illnesses that are Copyright © JK Rowling, this documentation has been compiled by Cleopatra2121 and is considered to belong to this player.
